Eric Clapton's Rare Patek Philippe Watches Head to Auction, Expected to Fetch Over $1 Million
Legendary musician Eric Clapton, renowned for his exquisite taste in timepieces, is once again making waves in the horological world. Two exceptional Patek Philippe watches from his esteemed collection are slated for an upcoming auction at Phillips in New York. These highly coveted pieces, reflecting Clapton's keen eye for rare and valuable watches, are anticipated to command significant prices, collectively exceeding one million dollars.
Iconic Timepieces from Eric Clapton's Collection Set for Phillips Auction in New York
In the vibrant metropolis of New York, this summer, two extraordinary Patek Philippe watches, once belonging to the iconic guitarist and singer Eric Clapton, will headline Phillips's upcoming watch auction on June 13 and 14. Clapton, celebrated for his extensive and discerning collection of rare timepieces, began to gradually divest himself of his horological treasures in the early 2000s, both through private sales and high-profile auctions.
Among the featured lots is a remarkable neo-vintage Patek Philippe Reference 5004. This particular model, produced between 1994 and 2010, is distinguished by its perpetual calendar complication harmoniously integrated with a split-seconds chronograph. What makes this piece exceptionally rare is its white-gold case paired with a distinctive 'rose' dial, a configuration Phillips describes as "most probably unique." Only 27 white-gold examples of this reference are known to exist, with very few featuring special-order dials in this metal. The dial itself is a marvel of horological artistry, displaying calendrical complications, a leap year indicator, a moon phase display, chronograph counters, a tachymeter scale, and elegant applied Breguet numeral 12 with dot hour markers. Given its singular nature and illustrious provenance, this Patek Philippe Ref. 5004 is projected to fetch between $700,000 and $1.4 million.
The auction also presents a Patek Philippe Nautilus 'Jumbo' (Reference 5711/1A-010), acquired by Clapton in 2018. This stainless-steel reference, launched in 2010 and subsequently discontinued in 2021, has become exceptionally desirable among collectors worldwide. Phillips notes that this specific example is offered in pristine condition, complete with all its original accessories. Experts anticipate this Nautilus to achieve a selling price of $70,000 to $140,000.
The New York Watch Auction: XIV promises an impressive array of vintage and contemporary timepieces from renowned maisons and independent watchmakers. Other notable items include a limited-edition F.P. Journe Chronomètre à Résonance 'Souscription No. 7' (one of only 20 ever made), a rare Rolex Daytona 'Paul Newman' featuring a 'John Player Special' dial, and another significant Patek Philippe Reference 1518.
The sale of these exquisite timepieces underscores Eric Clapton's profound influence not only in music but also in the world of high-end watch collecting. His foresight in acquiring such exceptional pieces, long before their current surge in popularity, solidifies his reputation as a true connoisseur. For collectors and enthusiasts, this auction represents a rare chance to own a piece of horological history, imbued with the legacy of a rock-and-roll icon. It highlights the enduring allure of master craftsmanship and the captivating stories behind luxury possessions.
