Christie's Auction Sees Blue Diamonds Fetch Over $8 Million Each

June 12

A recent high-profile auction held by Christie's, focusing on magnificent jewels, witnessed an impressive performance, with two rare blue diamonds each selling for over US$8 million. This remarkable outcome significantly contributed to the event's overall sales, which approached US$50 million, underscoring a robust and enthusiastic global market for exceptional gemstones.

The auction's standout pieces were undoubtedly the blue diamonds. 'The Azure Blue,' a magnificent 31.62-carat Fancy Blue Diamond, achieved a staggering US$8.37 million. Following closely, another exquisite 5.04-carat Fancy Vivid Blue marquise-cut diamond fetched US$8.13 million. These sales emphatically demonstrate the sustained and strong collector interest in rare colored diamonds worldwide.

Beyond the captivating blue diamonds, sapphires also proved to be a dominant force, emerging as one of the most successful categories in the auction. Three individual sapphire rings each surpassed the US$1.7 million threshold. A particular highlight was an 'Exceptional Sapphire and Diamond Ring,' which sold for US$2.27 million. Additionally, another sapphire ring achieved US$2.15 million, and a Graff sapphire and diamond ring reached US$1.78 million, further solidifying the strong demand for these vivid blue gems.

Claibourne Poindexter, the head of jewellery for the Americas at Christie's, articulated the sentiment surrounding the auction's success. Poindexter noted the vigorous demand across various categories, particularly for colored stones such as rare blue diamonds, extraordinary sapphires, and rubies. This widespread enthusiasm, he suggested, is a testament to the global appreciation for jewels that possess beauty, rarity, and a distinguished origin.

Furthermore, items from private collections generated considerable competitive bidding. The Joanna Carson Collection, in particular, saw several pieces exceed their initial estimations. A sapphire and diamond ring from this collection, for instance, sold for US$508,000, significantly surpassing its lower estimate of US$50,000. Other notable sales from the collection included sapphire earrings at US$457,200 and an emerald and diamond ring fetching US$368,300.

The auction also saw strong results for ruby jewelry, natural pearls, and signed vintage pieces. A pair of David Morris ruby and diamond pendant earrings realized US$1.42 million, while an antique natural pearl and diamond brooch sold for US$1.24 million. Vintage selections also performed well, with a Van Cleef & Arpels retro bracelet bringing in US$317,500 and an Art Deco diamond bow brooch selling for US$241,300.

Concluding with a total of US$49.69 million, the auction successfully sold every lot presented. Christie's reported widespread participation from buyers across the Americas, Asia-Pacific, and the Europe, Middle East, and Africa regions, highlighting the truly global reach and allure of the high-end jewelry market.
