CIBJO President Reiterates Jewelry Industry’s Sustainability Commitment at UN ECOSOC High Level Segment

July 16

During a significant gathering at the United Nations Headquarters in New York, the World Jewellery Confederation (CIBJO) reiterated its profound commitment to global sustainability initiatives. The organization's President, Gaetano Cavalieri, delivered a compelling address at the High Level Segment of the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), emphasizing the jewelry sector's dedication to supporting equitable, innovative, and coordinated efforts aligned with the UN's 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and its comprehensive Sustainable Development Goals.

Jewelry Industry's Green Initiative Unveiled at UN ECOSOC Meeting

In a pivotal address delivered in New York at the United Nations Headquarters, CIBJO President Gaetano Cavalieri articulated the jewelry industry's unwavering commitment to sustainability. Speaking at the High Level Segment of the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), Cavalieri highlighted CIBJO's long-standing role as the exclusive representative of the global jewelry industry within ECOSOC, a status it has held since 2006. This year marked a significant occasion, as CIBJO was among a select group of affiliated non-governmental organizations invited to present an oral statement to ECOSOC's general assembly.

Dr. Cavalieri's presentation underscored the imminent release of the first edition of CIBJO's ESG and Sustainability Reference Guide for the Jewellery Sector. This comprehensive document, set to be finalized prior to the organization's Centenary Congress in Vicenza, Italy, in early September, is designed to serve as a strategic blueprint for companies throughout the entire jewelry supply chain over the next five to ten years. It aims to consolidate the diverse array of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) topics into a clearly structured and prioritized framework.

Further emphasizing tangible progress, Dr. Cavalieri recounted his visit to India on World Water Day, March 22, 2026. During this visit, he participated in the inauguration of CIBJO Lake, a newly constructed freshwater reservoir in the state of Gujarat. This remarkable initiative, spanning 15 acres and possessing a storage capacity of 156 million liters, is poised to provide vital water resources to five surrounding villages, directly benefiting approximately 12,000 farmers. The Dholakia Foundation, the philanthropic arm of the Hari Krishna Group and a proud CIBJO member, fully financed and executed the construction of this essential infrastructure project.

Concluding his remarks, Dr. Cavalieri stressed the critical intersection of global challenges and industry resilience. He stated, "For CIBJO, many of the challenges addressed by the SDGs, such as climate change and resource scarcity, pose direct risks to the jewellery sector. Addressing these can help and ensure long-term business resilience." This statement encapsulates the industry's recognition of its environmental and social responsibilities and its proactive approach to integrating sustainable practices into its core operations.

This announcement by CIBJO President Gaetano Cavalieri at the UN ECOSOC meeting serves as a powerful reminder of the increasing importance of sustainability across all industries. The jewelry sector, often associated with luxury and aesthetics, is demonstrating a clear path towards responsible practices, from ethical sourcing to environmental stewardship. The development of the ESG and Sustainability Reference Guide and the impactful CIBJO Lake project in India highlight that concrete actions are being taken to address global challenges and secure a more sustainable future for both the industry and the communities it touches. It encourages other sectors to critically assess their own environmental and social footprints and to actively engage in initiatives that contribute to the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals. The message is clear: long-term business viability is inextricably linked to sustainable development.
