Engagement Ring Insurance: A Crucial but Overlooked Aspect of Ownership
A comprehensive study by Jewelers Mutual Group sheds light on the often-underestimated necessity of insuring engagement rings. The research indicates that a vast majority of wearers integrate their rings into all aspects of their lives, including travel and strenuous activities, yet a surprisingly low number secure adequate protection upon acquisition. This discrepancy points to a crucial need for increased awareness regarding the safeguarding of these valuable and sentimentally significant items.
Conducted in May 2026, the Jewelers Mutual Group's Engagement Ring Study surveyed 2,000 adults across the U.S. who had recently purchased or received an engagement ring within the last five years. A key finding was that only 49% of these individuals chose to insure their rings at the point of sale. Alarmingly, among those without insurance who experienced ring damage, over half (55%) never proceeded with repairs, underscoring the financial burden of unexpected incidents. Furthermore, the study revealed that a substantial portion of individuals (41%) hold onto the ring for over a month before the proposal, with nearly half (45%) storing it in unsecured locations like drawers or closets, inadvertently exposing it to risks even before it's worn.
The study also delved into the wearing habits of engagement ring owners. A striking 90% reported traveling with their rings, and a significant percentage continued to wear them during activities such as cooking (60%), sleeping (60%), and even hiking (65%). This consistent wear and exposure to various environments increase the likelihood of damage or loss. The personal value placed on these rings is evident, with 62% of respondents considering their engagement ring among their top three most expensive possessions. Generational differences were observed in ring-wearing trends, with more than 80% of couples aged 55 to 64 both wearing rings, a figure that drops to 43% for the 18 to 24 age group.
Regarding design preferences, uniqueness and aesthetic appeal emerged as the primary drivers, cited by 52% of those surveyed. Solitaire settings have seen a notable increase in popularity, now accounting for 37% of rings, up from 22% in 2024. While white gold remains the most prevalent metal choice, platinum has experienced a surge in preference. When it comes to seeking advice on jewelry insurance, jewelers are highly trusted, ranking second only to family members as reliable sources of information.
Mike Alexander, President of Jewelers Mutual, emphasized the dual importance of engagement rings as both valuable assets and cherished symbols. He highlighted that the pervasive wearing habits identified in the research necessitate robust protection. Alexander strongly advises obtaining insurance either before or at the time of the proposal, documenting the ring with professional appraisals and photographs, and securing it in a safe or safety deposit box prior to the proposal. He also advocates for specialized jewelry insurance, suggesting it offers more comprehensive coverage than standard homeowners' or renters' policies.
The study's insights highlight a significant disparity between the emotional and monetary value placed on engagement rings and the practical steps taken to protect them. The findings advocate for greater awareness and education among consumers about the importance of specialized jewelry insurance, particularly given the active lifestyles of modern wearers. This proactive approach ensures these cherished symbols remain safeguarded against unforeseen circumstances.
