Formex Unveils the AirField Series: A New Titanium Pilot's Watch with Enhanced Movement
Formex has unveiled its new AirField series, a significant evolution from its popular Field Automatic collection. Building on the robust engineering principles of its predecessors, this latest release transforms the established platform into an aviation-inspired timepiece, integrating a more potent movement while steadfastly upholding its commitment to affordability. The new AirField models promise enthusiasts a sophisticated yet accessible pilot's watch option, characterized by thoughtful design and enhanced performance.
Tracing its lineage from the 2022 Field Automatic and its refined 2025 Gen 2 iteration, the AirField series inherits a compact and resilient design. It utilizes the same 40mm Grade 2 titanium construction as the Field Gen 2, ensuring a lightweight profile at just 54 grams without the strap. The case measures 10.5mm in thickness and boasts a 48mm lug-to-lug distance, designed for comfortable wear. Formex has applied its signature hardening treatment, elevating the surface hardness to approximately 900 Vickers, providing exceptional scratch resistance. A sapphire crystal with an anti-reflective coating protects the dial, complementing the screw-down crown and a hardened titanium caseback adorned with an aircraft engine motif. These features collectively contribute to the watch's impressive 150-meter water resistance.
The dial of the AirField series draws inspiration directly from classic aviation instruments, prioritizing readability and functional aesthetics. It features a finely grained, stamped surface with a sloped chapter ring that subtly rises towards the sapphire crystal. Recessed Arabic numerals and hour markers, rendered in a stencil-style font, are generously filled with Super-LumiNova for superior low-light visibility. A triangle flanked by two dots at the 12 o'clock position offers a traditional and intuitive orientation cue for pilots. The watch's broad, sandblasted sword-shaped hour and minute hands are engineered for immediate time perception, while a slender seconds hand is counterbalanced with a distinctive aircraft shape. The date display, positioned at 6 o'clock, is presented within Formex's signature beveled window. The collection offers four distinct dial colors: Desert Sand, Horizon Blue, Jet Black, and Tarmac Grey, each paired with a color-matched date disc. The Desert Sand variant uniquely employs blacked-out lume, whereas the other three models utilize BGW9 for illumination.
Powering the AirField is the upgraded Sellita SW200-2 Power+ automatic movement, a significant enhancement over the Sellita SW200-1 found in the Field Gen 2. This new caliber dramatically extends the power reserve from 41 hours to a robust 65 hours, positioning it as a highly capable alternative to the ETA 2824. Operating at a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour and comprising 26 jewels, the movement accurately displays hours, minutes, seconds, and the date, ensuring reliable performance for daily wear and extended use.
The AirField series offers diverse strap options to suit various preferences. Customers can choose from lightweight elastic nylon Velcro straps available in black, blue, khaki green, or sand. Additionally, elegant Bolgheri leather straps are offered in black, leone brown, caraffa brown, blue, or violet. These leather options can be paired with Formex's innovative carbon-fiber composite deployant clasp, which features a convenient 7mm of gradual fine adjustment for a perfect fit. All straps incorporate Formex's Quick Release system, enabling effortless, tool-free changes, enhancing the watch's versatility and user experience.
Formex's new AirField series marks a commendable fusion of aviation-inspired aesthetics, robust engineering, and accessible pricing. By leveraging the successful foundation of its Field Automatic range and integrating key upgrades such as the enhanced Sellita SW200-2 Power+ movement, the brand delivers a compelling pilot's watch. The watch's durable titanium construction, thoughtfully designed dial for optimal readability, and versatile strap options underscore Formex's commitment to practical innovation. Set for pre-order from September 24, 2026, with deliveries commencing at the end of October, the AirField is poised to be an attractive proposition for watch enthusiasts seeking a high-value, performance-driven timepiece in the pilot watch segment.
