Grace Barden Becomes First Advanced Apprentice Graduate of MJSA Mentor & Apprenticeship Program
The MJSA Education Foundation has proudly announced Grace Barden as the inaugural Advanced Apprentice Graduate of its distinguished Mentor & Apprenticeship Program. Barden, who recently earned her BFA in jewelry and metalsmithing from the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee, completed her apprenticeship at Jost Jewelers in West Allis, WI. Her achievement underscores the effectiveness of the program in fostering highly skilled professionals for the jewelry industry. Following her graduation in May, Barden has successfully transitioned into a full-time role as a bench jeweler at the Heidi Lowe Gallery in Lewes, DE, a testament to the comprehensive training and recognition she received.
Launched in 2023, the MJSA Mentor & Apprenticeship Program is designed to equip aspiring jewelers with a robust set of skills through a 50-week curriculum. This comprehensive program integrates over 200 online videos and various resources, covering essential areas such as bench skills, casting techniques, and CAD/CAM software proficiency. To attain certification, apprentices are required to successfully complete 18 specific projects, which range in complexity from intricate pierced earrings and expertly stone-set rings to advanced 3-D printed models. The program’s curriculum is structured to progressively build skills, allowing participants to master foundational techniques before moving on to more complex designs and processes.
The program holds significant recognition, as it is officially approved by the U.S. Department of Labor as a Registered Apprenticeship Program. This federal endorsement provides substantial benefits to participants, making them eligible for various forms of financial support. These can include potential state and federal funding opportunities, such as grants, tax credits, and tuition assistance, further enhancing the accessibility and appeal of the program for emerging jewelers seeking to advance their careers. This accreditation highlights the program's commitment to high standards and its contribution to workforce development within the jewelry sector.
Grace Barden expressed immense satisfaction with the program, stating that its well-structured nature allowed her to effectively identify and focus on areas where she needed improvement. She highlighted the significant gains she made in both her professional and technical capabilities, as well as a notable boost in her confidence regarding her craftsmanship. Barden found the curriculum's progression particularly beneficial, noting how starting with simpler projects, such as pierced earrings, allowed her to gradually develop and transform her skills. She believes that even individuals with no prior metalsmithing experience could successfully complete the curriculum and acquire a wealth of knowledge, given its clear and sequential design.
Barden also emphasized the crucial role her certification played in securing her current employment. She recounted how mentioning her participation in the program and detailing the skills she was acquiring directly led to her being hired as a bench jeweler, rather than an intern. This outcome demonstrates the tangible value of the program's certification, which provides a credible endorsement of an individual's skills and readiness for professional roles within the jewelry industry.
Grace Barden's journey as the first Advanced Apprentice Graduate exemplifies the program's success in cultivating skilled jewelers. The rigorous curriculum, coupled with official recognition, prepares individuals not just with technical expertise but also with the confidence and credentials necessary to excel in the competitive jewelry market. This achievement is a significant milestone for the MJSA Education Foundation and a promising indicator for the future of professional development in the jewelry trade, showcasing the profound impact of structured mentorship and comprehensive training on career advancement.

It suggests reserving the term "synthetic" for industrially produced diamonds and advocating for a distinct quality control nomenclature for man-made products to avoid consumer confusion regarding rarity and value. Udi Sheintal, head of the CIBJO Diamond Commission, emphasizes that using the 4Cs for synthetic diamonds misleads consumers into believing they possess the same rarity as natural diamonds.
