The MAT Watches Egg Master II: A Culinary Dive Watch Innovation

July 09

While many dive watches are designed for underwater exploration, French brand MAT Watches playfully acknowledges their common use for everyday timing tasks. With a touch of humor and ingenuity, the brand has introduced the new Egg Master II, ingeniously converting the traditional rotating bezel into a specialized tool for perfectly cooking eggs. This innovative timepiece builds upon its predecessor, the original Egg Master, with significant enhancements.

Crafted in collaboration with MAT founder Fabrice Pougez, journalist Paul Miquel, and award-winning chef Fabien Pairon, the Egg Master II simplifies the art of cooking eggs. Its unique bezel is marked to time four distinct preparations: poached, soft-boiled, medium-boiled, and hard-boiled, with precise timing requirements ranging from 2 minutes 35-45 seconds to 8 minutes 20-30 seconds. To operate, users simply align the desired cooking style with the minute hand, initiate cooking when the seconds hand reaches zero, and follow the color-coded zones on the inner dial ring for precise countdowns, emphasizing that achieving the ideal egg is truly a matter of seconds. It's important to note that these timings are optimized for medium-sized 53-gram eggs cooked at sea level, as altitude can influence the cooking process.

Beneath its whimsical functionality, the Egg Master II is a robust sports watch, featuring MAT's Picobello case constructed from 316L stainless steel. Measuring 39.5mm in diameter and 12mm thick, it offers a compact yet solid feel. The watch is equipped with a domed sapphire crystal, an oversized screw-down crown, and boasts a water resistance of 200 meters, ensuring genuine dive watch capabilities. Its off-white, eggshell-toned dial provides exceptional legibility with prominent markers and hands treated with Super-LumiNova. Colorful accents of orange, green, blue, and red differentiate the cooking zones, maintaining clarity within its tool-watch design. A significant upgrade from its quartz-powered predecessor, the Egg Master II now houses an automatic Soprod M100 movement, an acclaimed Swiss alternative to other industry standards, offering a 42-hour power reserve and visible through a transparent caseback. This limited-edition watch, accompanied by yellow, beige Tropic-style rubber straps, and an eggshell canvas strap, was available for pre-order starting June 9, 2026, at an introductory price of EUR 990.

This innovative timepiece exemplifies how traditional craftsmanship and a playful spirit can merge to create something truly unique and practical. By embracing an unexpected utility, the MAT Watches Egg Master II offers a fresh perspective on the role of a watch, demonstrating that even the most specialized instruments can find joy and relevance in the everyday. It encourages us to appreciate the subtle blend of art and engineering, reminding us that precision and enjoyment can coexist harmoniously in our daily lives.
