A recent announcement from the Swiss Gemmological Institute (SSEF) confirms the identification of a new source for copper-bearing tourmaline in Ethiopia. This material, widely recognized as Paraíba tourmaline, has quickly drawn significant interest within the international gemstone community.

Paraíba tourmalines first rose to prominence in the late 1980s following their discovery in Brazil, prized for their vibrant blue to bluish-green hues, often described as “neon” or “electric.” The distinctive coloration is attributed to copper present in the crystal structure. Subsequently, other deposits were located in Nigeria and Mozambique, with the latter becoming a key supplier of larger, high-quality specimens, some weighing hundreds of carats.

The SSEF noted that recent submissions of copper-bearing tourmalines for analysis have presented difficulties in pinpointing their geographic origin. Preliminary examinations of trace elements in these new samples reveal similarities with materials from established sources, including Brazil, complicating precise origin identification. The institute is actively engaged in further research to thoroughly characterize the Ethiopian material and enhance analytical techniques for distinguishing between different deposits.
