Nomos Metro Series Receives Ice Blue Dial Refresh and Movement Upgrade

October 08

Nomos has introduced two refreshed timepieces to its acclaimed Metro collection: the Metro Date Power Reserve and the Metro Neomatik 41 Update. Both models now feature a striking ice blue dial, bringing a cool, contemporary aesthetic to their urban-inspired designs. Notably, the Metro Date Power Reserve also benefits from a significant internal upgrade, housing the brand's latest manual-winding movement, the DUW 4701, which promises enhanced precision and an extended power reserve. This dual release underscores Nomos's commitment to blending distinctive design with innovative watchmaking.

The Metro series, originally conceived by designer Mark Braun in 2014, draws inspiration from metropolitan signage and graphics, subtly integrating vibrant color accents into Nomos's established Bauhaus design principles. The initial Metro Date Power Reserve was a landmark release, being the first to showcase the proprietary Nomos Swing System escapement. This in-house innovation marked a pivotal moment for the brand, solidifying its position as a serious manufacturer of in-house movements by replacing previously outsourced components. The new ice blue variants continue this legacy, combining aesthetic refinement with horological advancement.

The Refined Metro Date Power Reserve

The latest iteration of the Metro Date Power Reserve maintains the characteristic asymmetric dial layout, featuring a power reserve indicator between 12 and 1 o'clock and the brand's emblem at 9 o'clock. The metallic ice blue dial incorporates a tri-color power reserve wheel, distinguishing full, neutral, and low power states with teal, light blue, and white, respectively. White minute dots complement grey Arabic numerals on the peripheral track, while teal dots mark the hours, contributing to a cohesive and stylish visual presentation. The small seconds sub-dial and date window are positioned at 6 o'clock, with a light blue hand for the seconds and grey numerals on a white date disc.

Encased in a polished 37mm steel body with a svelte 7.8mm profile, wire lugs, and a slender bezel, the watch retains its compact and elegant form. The new Metro Date Power Reserve is powered by the DUW 4701 manual-winding caliber, a successor to the DUW 4601. This refined movement, measuring 32.1mm x 2.8mm, is specifically engineered to manage the watch's distinctive asymmetric displays and offers a rapid date-setting function along with a 52-hour power reserve. Through the sapphire caseback, the movement's intricate details are visible, including sunbeam ribbing, perlage, golden engravings, and temperature-blued screws, all highlighted by the bright blue hairspring of the Swing System.

Metro Neomatik 41 Update's Blue Horizon

Introduced in 2021, the Metro Neomatik 41 Update is the largest and most visually compelling model in the Metro lineup, distinguished by its patented peripheral ring date complication. This innovative feature, first seen on the Tangente in 2018, presents the entire month at a glance, resembling a circular timetable with cut-out areas on the dial acting as indicators for the current date. The new ice blue version adopts a more streamlined color palette, with two teal markers indicating the current date on the outer ring, complemented by subtle light-blue minute dots and grey Arabic numerals. White hour dots, with larger markers at 12, 3, and 9 o'clock, further enhance readability.

The 40.5mm x 9.1mm stainless steel case, complete with wire lugs and a slim bezel, accentuates the expansive ice blue dial. The watch is driven by the in-house automatic DUW 6101 Neomatik movement, which is remarkably thin at just 3.6mm. This caliber features an integrated date mechanism, stop-seconds function, and a power reserve of up to 50 hours. The exhibition caseback reveals the movement's decorative elements, such as classic Glashütte ribbing on the three-quarter plate, perlage finishing, elegant golden engravings, and signature blue tempered screws, showcasing Nomos's commitment to both aesthetic and mechanical excellence.
