Seiko Celebrates PADI's 60th Anniversary with a Limited-Edition "Turtle" Dive Watch
Seiko has unveiled a special Prospex HBB002 PADI Limited Edition timepiece, marking the 60th anniversary of the Professional Association of Diving Instructors (PADI). This new iteration of the classic "Turtle" diver's watch boasts a vibrant electric sunburst blue dial adorned with a subtle globe pattern, complementing its durable ceramic bezel insert. Drawing inspiration from PADI's emblem and the shared dedication to ocean exploration, this model combines aesthetic appeal with robust functionality for diving enthusiasts.
The HBB002, often referred to as the "King Turtle," features a stainless steel cushion case with a 45mm diameter, a thickness of 13.2mm, and a lug-to-lug measurement of 47.7mm. Despite these dimensions, the watch is designed to wear comfortably, appearing more compact on the wrist due to its smaller bezel and dial relative to the case size. It comes equipped with a classic Oyster-style bracelet featuring slender polished channels on the outer links and a folding clasp that includes a dive extension, allowing for wear over a wetsuit. An alternative high-strength silicone strap with distinct PADI branding is also provided, enhancing its versatility.
A screw-down crown, strategically placed at the 4 o'clock position, ensures water resistance and controls the internal automatic Seiko 4R36 movement. This movement operates at 21,600 vibrations per hour (3Hz), contains 24 jewels, and offers a power reserve of 41 hours. While specific details about the case back remain under wraps, it is anticipated to be a solid steel component engraved with PADI details. The combination of the secure crown, case back, and sapphire crystal endows the Seiko HBB002 with a water resistance rating of 200 meters, making it a reliable companion for underwater adventures.
The striking electric-blue sunburst dial pays homage to the PADI logo, which depicts a red diver against a blue globe. The dial subtly incorporates this globe motif, while a red seconds hand and red text provide sporty accents without overpowering the overall design. The ceramic bezel insert, in a matching electric-blue hue, offers superior scratch resistance, echoing the durability of the sapphire crystal which is treated with an anti-reflective coating on its underside and features a distinctive magnifier for the day and date display.
This limited edition timepiece, restricted to 8,000 units globally, is scheduled for release in July. Priced at €750, it offers a compelling blend of design, functionality, and historical significance for both watch collectors and diving enthusiasts. Its balanced design, which tastefully integrates PADI's branding without excessive embellishment, sets it apart from other more overtly themed limited editions. The watch provides a stylish yet functional tribute to six decades of PADI's commitment to diver training and ocean conservation.
