Watch Enthusiasts Gather at Neighborhood Watch Fair for Rare Timepieces and Community Spirit
The recent Neighborhood Watch Fair in Los Angeles served as a vibrant hub for watch enthusiasts, uniting collectors and brands in a shared passion for exquisite timepieces. The event, orchestrated by the founder of the Neighborhood Watch Club, Jarrod Cooper, successfully blended the allure of high-end watchmaking with a strong sense of community. Attendees had the unique opportunity to explore both modern independent creations and treasured vintage models, fostering discussions and connections among like-minded individuals. Beyond just sales, the fair emphasized transparency, craftsmanship, and the inclusive spirit that defines the world of horology, promising to expand its reach to more states in the future.
Luxury Timepieces and Community Spirit Thrive at Los Angeles Watch Fair
On a recent Saturday in the bustling heart of Downtown Los Angeles, the Bike Shed Moto Co. was transformed into a haven for horology enthusiasts, hosting the much-anticipated Neighborhood Watch Fair. This unique gathering, spearheaded by Jarrod Cooper of the Neighborhood Watch Club, attracted a diverse crowd of collectors and admirers from across Southern California, all drawn by a shared passion for exceptional timepieces.
Among the exhibitors was Christopher Wegener, cofounder and director of Pragma, a two-year-old independent watchmaker from Geneva. Wegener unveiled a stunning new iteration of the brand’s P1 Perseverance model, featuring an alluring silver obsidian dial. This exquisite watch, destined for its official debut at the upcoming London Watch Week, is available in a limited series of six pieces: five in steel priced at 34,500 Swiss francs, and a single rose gold variant at 53,810 Swiss francs. Wegener emphasized Pragma’s commitment to transparency, proudly detailing that every component is 100 percent Swiss-made, with cases crafted by Kari Voutilainen and movements by Chronode. He highlighted the 39 mm P1’s Bauhaus-inspired case architecture, characterized by its layered construction and minimalist aesthetic.
Nearby, Brandon Skinner, founder of Horology by the Sea, a dealer specializing in independent and pre-owned luxury watches from Encinitas, California, showcased a range of rare finds. A notable highlight was the new Montpelier watch by 1776 Atelier, an American brand established in 2023 by tech executive Jason Lu. Priced at $17,800, this piece impressed connoisseurs with its skeletonized hand-wound movement and impeccable hand-finishing, with Skinner noting that 80 percent of the work is American-made and that watchmakers unanimously felt the piece was undervalued.
The fair also captivated vintage watch aficionados. Jed Lackman, a long-time watch enthusiast and attorney, specifically sought out Skinner to view his special edition Chopard L.U.C XP Skeletec, known for its vibrant orange lacquered hands. Lackman, a former co-moderator of the Chopard forum on Purists.com, expressed deep admiration for the brand's evolution.
Cooper’s own vintage dealership, Keepiece, presented a curated selection of well-preserved wristwatches from esteemed brands such as Omega, Tudor, and Grand Seiko, complemented by an array of customizable leather straps. Tyler Vanes, cofounder of Craft & Tailored, brought his own impressive collection, including a 1978 Rolex Ref. 1530 and a pristine Patek Philippe Ref. 570 in 18-karat yellow gold, offered at $37,500. Vanes described the Patek, a model from the early 1960s with a hard enamel text dial and its original box and certificate, as a true "time capsule piece."
Beyond the watches for sale, the fair featured local watch connoisseur and magician Morgan King, who entertained attendees with card tricks, showcasing his own impressive double-wristed collection: a rare Rolex Double Red Sea-Dweller 1665 MK0 prototype and an original Omega Speedmaster Ultraman. The event also highlighted the work of master engraver Artur Akmaev and L.A. cutlery brand Fell Knives, alongside displays of luxury vehicles like a Porsche 993 Turbo and a Lamborghini Huracán Sterrato. Cooper reiterated the club’s inclusive philosophy, welcoming collectors with million-dollar collections and those with watches under $1,000, emphasizing that the fairs are about building a community around shared interests. He plans to expand these events, with two more in Los Angeles this year and future fairs in other states, bringing together diverse brands and passionate collectors.
This event underscores a significant trend in the luxury market: the growing desire for authentic connections and community among collectors. It highlights that beyond the monetary value of rare timepieces, the shared knowledge, enthusiasm, and camaraderie are equally, if not more, valuable. The transparency advocated by brands like Pragma sets a new standard, emphasizing ethical craftsmanship and open communication, which will likely resonate deeply with an increasingly informed consumer base. For me, this fair symbolizes the evolving landscape of luxury, where accessibility and community spirit are becoming as important as exclusivity and prestige.
