Kimberley Sunshine Diamond Shines at Heritage's $7.7 Million Fine Jewelry Auction

October 02

Heritage Auctions' recent Fall Fine Jewelry Signature Auction, held on September 28, saw remarkable success, with total sales reaching an impressive $7,707,260. The star of the event was undoubtedly the Kimberley Sunshine Diamond, a spectacular 22.09-carat fancy yellow diamond that fetched $475,000. The auction captivated 1,610 bidders from around the world, showcasing robust interest across a diverse range of items, including white and colored diamonds, exclusive designer creations, and, notably, a surge in demand for antique and period jewelry.

The Kimberley Sunshine Diamond ring, a highlight of the auction, is renowned for its Internally Flawless clarity and confirmed South African origin from the historic Kimberley Mine. This exquisite piece features its dazzling center stone meticulously set in hand-forged 18k yellow gold talon claws, complemented by a platinum band adorned with graduating rows of French- and carré-cut diamonds. Jill Burgum, Heritage's Executive Director of Fine Jewelry, emphasized that the diamond's extraordinary size, natural vibrant color, impeccable clarity, documented provenance, and superior craftsmanship were key factors in its appeal, leading to a sale price almost double its initial pre-auction estimate.

Beyond the Kimberley Sunshine Diamond, other significant diamond pieces also garnered considerable attention and strong bids. An 8.17-carat emerald-cut diamond set in a platinum solitaire ring sold for $275,000, while a necklace featuring a 22.06-carat round brilliant-cut diamond commanded $212,500. Additionally, an Oscar Heyman ring showcasing a 14.11-carat fancy yellow diamond with triangular-shaped diamond accents achieved $175,000, and a Carvin French platinum ring with a 7.02-carat oval-shaped diamond realized $112,500. Smaller yet equally captivating colored diamonds also performed well, including a 7.41-carat fancy yellow diamond ring that went for $93,750, and a Tiffany & Co. ring centered by a 5.76-carat fancy yellow diamond, which sold for $65,625.

The auction's success extended to signed designer jewelry, further demonstrating its enduring market strength. A David Webb necklace, intricately designed with pavé diamond panels and sculptural yellow gold links, totaling 47.79 carats of diamonds, sold for $75,000. A Van Cleef & Arpels diamond, mother-of-pearl, and rose gold “Bal du Siècle” watch achieved $62,500, and a Cartier & V.C. Perren convertible necklace brought in $57,500. An Hermès Alchimie bracelet, crafted from 18k rose gold and set with 4.71 carats of diamonds, also performed strongly, selling for $52,500.

Perhaps one of the most compelling narratives from the auction was the unexpected resurgence of antique and period jewels. Pieces spanning the Victorian era through Art Deco designs witnessed enthusiastic bidding. A remarkable circa 1925 Cartier Art Deco watch, featuring jadeite jade, black onyx, enamel, and diamonds, realized $93,750. This intricate French creation, combining a jewel-like brooch with a suspended seal watch, captivated bidders with its unique design and historical significance. Other notable antique sales included a Vatican City Workshop Victorian micromosaic necklace from circa 1870, which sold for $21,250, and a Victorian coral, diamond, and enamel suite, fetching $17,500. Estate collections, particularly from the Charlotte Ralph Brunt Estate, also performed exceptionally well, featuring iconic pieces such as a Jean Schlumberger for Tiffany & Co. Bird on a Rock brooch, which sold for $57,500, and several colorful Schlumberger Croisillon enamel bangles.

The recent fine jewelry auction by Heritage Auctions demonstrated a vibrant market for high-quality and historically significant pieces. The event's broad appeal, ranging from contemporary designer items to antique treasures, underscores the enduring allure of meticulously crafted jewelry and the strong engagement of a global bidder base.
