Seiko Unveils Whimsical Panda-Themed Chronograph Watches

October 09

Seiko has announced the release of two limited-edition timepieces, the HHK001 and HHK002, under its Power Design Project Collection 2. These new chronographs bring to life a playful panda-themed concept originally showcased in 2024. The initiative, established in 2001, encourages Seiko's designers to explore imaginative watch designs, with these two models being rare instances of concept pieces transitioning into commercial availability. Each watch features a distinctive aesthetic inspired by pandas, incorporating unique design elements that cater to enthusiasts of both horology and wildlife.

The HHK001 and HHK002 models boast stainless steel cases, each measuring 43mm in diameter and 14.6mm in thickness. Their silhouette distinctly mimics a panda's head, complete with 'ear-shaped' chronograph pushers positioned at 12 o'clock. Both timepieces are fitted with Hardlex crystals protecting their panda-face dials, while the casebacks continue the theme with a black stripe and a small tail detail. The HHK001, closely resembling the initial 2024 concept, showcases a white textured panda-face dial paired with a white leather strap. The HHK002, inspired by baby pandas, features a soft pink dial and strap combination. These models are highly exclusive, with 3,000 units of the white-dial HHK001 and 2,000 units of the pink-dial HHK002 available globally.

Powering these whimsical chronographs is Seiko's Caliber 8T61 quartz movement, which provides a 60-minute chronograph function and boasts an approximate battery life of three years. A charming detail for these panda-inspired watches is the renaming of the traditional tachymeter scale to 'Sasameter,' a nod to sasa, the Japanese term for bamboo, which forms a significant part of a panda's diet. While the 2024 concept watch featured the word 'Pandagraph' as the panda's mouth, the production models opt for a simpler, printed mouth design. Additionally, the sub-dial markings, which were tone-on-tone in the original concept, have been rendered in white on the HHK001 and HHK002 to enhance visibility.

These new additions to the Seiko Power Design Project Collection represent a delightful blend of innovative design and practical functionality. With their distinctive panda motif, durable construction, and reliable quartz movement, these limited-edition chronographs are set to captivate watch collectors and panda enthusiasts alike, offering a unique and charming statement piece for any wrist.
