Vacheron Constantin and Phillips Unveil Finalists for Inaugural Horological Concours d'Élégance
Vacheron Constantin, in collaboration with the esteemed Phillips auction house, recently unveiled the 34 finalists for their groundbreaking Concours d'Élégance Horlogère. This unique competition, drawing inspiration from prestigious automotive elegance contests, aims to spotlight the finest vintage Vacheron Constantin timepieces worldwide, acknowledging both the exceptional craftsmanship of the watches and the unwavering dedication of their collectors. It also serves as a platform to encourage enthusiasts to bring hidden treasures to light.
A distinguished panel of fourteen jurors meticulously evaluated an impressive 550 submissions from vintage watch aficionados across the globe. The selected 34 finalists will contend for top honors in seven distinct categories: chronographs, Métiers d'Art, Chronomètre Royal, astronomical complications, multiple complications, design, and chiming mechanisms. These remarkable timepieces, some previously unknown to many, will be showcased in Geneva from November 4th to 8th, leading up to the grand awards ceremony on November 10th, where category winners and a potential "Best in Show" will be announced.
The jury, comprised of luminaries such as Dr. Helmut Crott, Aurel Bacs, Alex Ghotbi, Auro Montanari, Jiaxian Su (SJX), Roberta Naas, and Ben Clymer, along with the unexpectedly included Felix Baumgartner of Urwerk, brought diverse expertise to the evaluation process. Vacheron's heritage department played a crucial role in verifying the authenticity and documentation of each entry. Among the standout finalists are two vintage Ref. 4764 "Cioccolatone" triple calendars, including a platinum version that fetched over CHF 600,000 at a 2022 Sotheby's auction, highlighting the intriguing debate between restored condition and original rarity. Other notable entries include a vintage Ref. 6213 world time, a Ref. 6448 minute repeater with diamond indices, intricate enamel work, a Ref. 4072 with a telemeter dial, and the return of the renowned "Don Pancho" minute repeater. The competition promises an exciting conclusion as the watch world eagerly awaits the final results.
This innovative Concours d'Élégance represents a remarkable fusion of horological artistry and community appreciation. By celebrating the historical legacy of Vacheron Constantin and the passion of its collectors, the event fosters a deeper understanding and admiration for vintage timepieces. It encourages not only the preservation of these mechanical marvels but also highlights the enduring human desire for excellence and beauty in craftsmanship. Such initiatives inspire future generations to engage with the rich narratives embedded within these exquisite works of art, ensuring the continued vitality of fine watchmaking.
