Garmin Unveils Marq Gen 3: Enhanced Design, Satellite, and LTE Connectivity

October 13

Garmin's Marq collection, first introduced in 2019, sought to provide discerning customers with a high-end, meticulously engineered product. With the debut of the third generation, Garmin elevates this concept even further. The new release features six distinct timepieces: the Marq Adventurer, Athlete, Aviator, Commander, Diver, and Golfer, each meticulously crafted to cater to specific pursuits.

A notable advancement lies in the revamped 47mm case construction. Garmin employs nano molding technology, seamlessly integrating a glass-filled polymer with titanium at a nanoscale level. This innovative process creates non-metallic sections at the top and bottom of the case, allowing for enhanced antenna transmission without the need for traditional gaskets, resulting in a sleeker design. This construction also accommodates the integration of LTE and satellite communication alongside existing GPS, Bluetooth, and Wi-Fi capabilities. Furthermore, the new design eliminates the five button holes present in the Gen 2 case. A polymer wall now seals the case, with an inductive sensor registering button presses and providing tactile feedback externally, thereby removing common failure points associated with traditional dive watch crowns and pushers. This engineering marvel even necessitated a shift in the Commander's DLC coating process, moving to a lower-temperature application to prevent polymer deformation, with laser removal of the coating from antenna areas.

Among the lineup, the new Diver model stands out. It features a fixed ceramic bezel and a 60-minute timer integrated into the display. Its buttons are rated for various underwater activities, including scuba, apnea, and snorkeling, down to a depth of 40 meters. For Garmin-equipped boats, the watch can even control autopilot functions and assist with navigation. The remaining models offer tailored features: the Adventurer includes 360-degree compass markings and multi-layered mapping; the Athlete tracks VO2 max and stamina; the Aviator boasts UTC markings and flight mapping; the Commander incorporates night vision and an Applied Ballistics solver; and the Golfer provides an 18-hole indicator and virtual caddie functionalities.

All six Marq 3 models share a 47mm Grade-5 titanium case, a 15mm thickness, a sapphire crystal, and a unique ceramic bezel inlay. They feature a vibrant 1.4-inch borderless AMOLED display with a peak brightness of 3,000 nits, which is 36% larger than its predecessor. Battery life extends up to 18 days (7 days with the always-on display), and all models are water-resistant to 10 ATM. Each watch includes a speaker, microphone, LED flashlight, ECG app, and 128GB of storage for preloaded maps. Connectivity is powered by inReach, offering LTE for calls and live location sharing via Garmin Messenger, and both LTE and satellite for text, voice messages, and weather forecasts. An SOS feature connects to Garmin Response, a 24/7 coordination center. These advanced features require an active subscription plan, priced at $9.99 per month after a 30-day trial. Prices range from $2,500 for the Athlete to $3,100 for the Aviator, Commander, and Diver, with various strap options. The Marq 3 collection is currently available through Garmin and its authorized retailers.

The Marq 3 collection represents a significant leap in smartwatch technology, pushing the boundaries of what a wearable device can achieve. While the premium price point may seem high compared to entry-level smartwatches, the specialized functionalities, advanced materials, and robust connectivity offered by the Marq 3 cater to a niche audience seeking uncompromising performance in specific domains. The existence of such sophisticated smartwatches alongside traditional timepieces underscores a dynamic market where innovation thrives, offering consumers a spectrum of choices to suit their diverse needs and lifestyles. This technological evolution allows individuals to embrace both cutting-edge functionality and timeless craftsmanship, enhancing their daily lives and pursuits.
