Leading Jewelers Eye Stakes in De Beers Consortium

October 16

Major players in the jewelry sector, Signet Jewelers and Richemont, are exploring the possibility of investing in the Global Diamond Consortium. This consortium is currently the leading contender to acquire De Beers, the renowned diamond mining company. The potential involvement of these prominent firms could reshape the landscape of the diamond industry.

Sources close to the negotiations, as reported by Bloomberg News on Thursday, October 15, 2026, indicate that discussions are underway for Signet Jewelers and Richemont, owner of Cartier, to join the Global Diamond Consortium. This consortium, spearheaded by former De Beers CEO Gareth Penny, was designated as the preferred bidder for De Beers in July, following Anglo American's announcement in May 2024 to sell off the diamond miner.

The precise equity holdings that Signet and Richemont might acquire within the consortium are not yet clear, and there's no assurance that either company will finalize their participation. Given that several entities, including Namibia, Angola, Botswana, and various private investors, are already committed to the consortium, any stakes taken by Signet and Richemont are likely to be relatively modest. Botswana, an existing shareholder in De Beers, possesses a right of first refusal, but has not publicly declared whether it intends to exercise this option. Officials had previously suggested that a deal could be finalized by the fourth quarter of the current year.

Richemont's leadership has consistently expressed a clear stance against the use of laboratory-grown diamonds. Analysts at RBC suggest that Richemont's potential participation would be more impactful for its symbolic value and its contribution to the prestige and market position of natural diamonds, rather than for its immediate financial implications. Both Signet and Richemont have not yet provided official responses to inquiries regarding their prospective involvement, and Anglo American has also refrained from commenting on the matter.

The potential entry of Signet and Richemont into the consortium bidding for De Beers underscores the strategic importance of the diamond industry's future direction. Their involvement could bring significant influence and market credibility, particularly concerning the perception and valuation of natural diamonds in a competitive global market.
