The Resurgence of a Classic: MB&F Unveils the Reimagined Legacy Machine 1 EVO
MB&F's initial Legacy Machine 1, launched in 2011, stood out with its distinctive blend of classic 19th-century horology and the brand's signature three-dimensional, futuristic flair. While diverging from their typical "Horological Machine" aesthetic with its round case and Roman numerals, the LM1 carved its own niche with a prominent flying balance wheel, solidifying its place as a foundational piece in the LM series. After six years, the LM1 was retired in 2017, but it now makes a triumphant return as the LM1 EVO, meticulously re-engineered for increased durability and an active lifestyle.
Introducing the Reinvigorated LM1 EVO
The original Legacy Machine was Max Büsser's homage to the great horological innovators of the 19th century, infused with MB&F's dynamic vision. It featured a substantial 44mm round case, twin independent time displays, a striking 14mm flying balance wheel, and a vertical power reserve indicator. A key practical innovation was the ability to independently set each sub-dial for precise time zone adjustments. Over the years, the LM series expanded to include more intricate models like the LM Perpetual and the LM Sequential EVO, which prompted the development of the "EVO" concept. This enhancement focuses on making these mechanically complex timepieces more robust for everyday wear.
The EVO line integrates features such as a re-engineered case, often crafted from zirconium or titanium, equipped with a screw-down crown to ensure 80 meters of water resistance. It also incorporates a patented FlexRing shock-absorption system and a comfortable, integrated rubber strap designed for resilience. Following the successful application of the EVO treatment to models like the LM Perpetual, Split Escapement, Sequential, 101, and Sequential Flyback, the original LM1 now receives this significant upgrade.
The LM1 EVO is housed in a more compact and ergonomic 42mm case, with a thickness of 16.8mm, featuring hyper-domed sapphire crystal over the dial and a box sapphire crystal on the back. It comes with two screw-down crowns. Available options include a titanium case with a rhodium-plated dial plate, black sub-dials, and blue luminous hands, or a luxurious rose gold edition with a vibrant green dial plate, black sub-dials, and gold-toned luminous hands.
A notable design improvement is the case's bezel-less construction, which seamlessly integrates the steep curve of the sapphire dome directly into the metal using a high-tech thermal bonding process. This method enhances structural integrity while allowing more light to illuminate the movement plate.
While retaining the distinctive dual time zones and the impressive 14mm balance wheel, the LM1 EVO introduces several enhancements. The power reserve indicator has been redesigned as an inclined arc, now reflecting an extended 60-hour power reserve, an increase from the original LM1's 45 hours. Furthermore, the 2.5 Hz balance has been upgraded with a Straumann double hairspring for enhanced accuracy and isochronism, and the regulating system is presented under a newly designed titanium bridge.
The manual-winding caliber, a collaborative effort with Jean-François Mojon, maintains its 60-hour power reserve and showcases exquisite 19th-century finishing techniques, overseen by Kari Voutilainen. These include polished countersunk gold chatons, Geneva waves, polished bevels with internal angles, intricate hand engravings, and modern NAC black bridges.
A practical innovation for the LM1 EVO is the introduction of interchangeable rubber straps, featuring a quick-release system on both the case and clasp. The titanium model is paired with a black rubber strap, while the rose gold version comes with a grey rubber strap, both complemented by matching metal folding buckles. The rose gold model is a limited edition of 33 pieces, priced at CHF 102,000 / USD 137,000 / EUR 111,000 (excluding VAT). The non-limited titanium edition is available for CHF 82,000 / USD 109,000 / EUR 89,000 (excluding VAT).
A Timeless Design Reimagined for the Modern Era
The return of the MB&F Legacy Machine 1 as the LM1 EVO highlights the brand's commitment to evolving its classic designs while embracing contemporary demands for durability and functionality. This new iteration successfully bridges the gap between historical horological artistry and modern wearability, offering collectors a timepiece that is as resilient as it is visually stunning. It demonstrates that true innovation lies not just in creating novelties, but also in perfecting beloved classics, ensuring they remain relevant and captivating for new generations of enthusiasts.
