Six Individuals Charged in New Jersey Jewelry Store Robbery Spree
Federal authorities have announced charges against six individuals involved in a series of jewelry store smash-and-grab robberies across New Jersey. The incidents, which collectively resulted in the theft of hundreds of thousands of dollars in valuables, span three different locations and exhibit a consistent modus operandi.
These coordinated thefts took place during business hours, with masked assailants forcefully breaking display cases using tools such as hammers, crowbars, and sledgehammers. Investigations led by federal authorities, including U.S. Attorney for New Jersey Robert Frazer, revealed crucial evidence. In one instance in Paterson, NJ, two suspects left behind blood evidence after sustaining injuries from breaking glass, which subsequently led to the identification of Shaquan Jones, 24, and Kayron Caldwell, 34, both from Newark. Further digital forensics uncovered a cloud-stored photograph showing one of the individuals with a bandaged hand and a significant amount of cash.
Separately, Derreck Proctor, 33, also of Newark, was implicated in the Union City robbery through security camera footage and additional blood evidence. The surveillance also captured him purchasing sledgehammers prior to the crime. In a third incident involving Massola Jewelers in Wayne, Terrance Drakeford, 33, Wyzier Peterson, 28, and Corey Boyd, 29, were identified. Their attempt to evade capture after a traffic stop in Haledon, NJ, resulted in a vehicle crash. All six individuals are now facing federal Hobbs Act robbery charges, each potentially leading to a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison.
The successful apprehension and charging of these individuals underscore the effectiveness of law enforcement's investigative techniques and dedication to upholding justice. These actions send a clear message that criminal activities will be met with rigorous pursuit and severe consequences, ensuring the safety and security of businesses and communities.
